Storyline: Iona eyes first place in the MAAC and five straight victories when they visit Monmouth Monday.
The Breakdown: The Gaels improved to 9-2 in the conference and sit a half game behind Canisius in second place after a decisive 85-73 victory over Manhattan Friday. Iona got double-figures in scoring from five different players, including 21 points off the bench from junior F David Laury. Senior F Mike Poole scored 19 points and grabbed 8 rebounds; senior G Sean Armand had 18 points, sophomore G A.J. English scored 14 points and sophomore G Isaiah Williams added 10 points. The Gaels shot 48.4 percent from the floor and 33.3 percent from outside the arc to Manhattan’s 40.6 percent from the field and 34.8 percent from distance. Through 20 games, Iona is averaging 83.2 ppg on 48.1 percent shooting. Armand leads the team in scoring with 18.3 ppg, followed by English at 17.6 ppg.

Meanwhile, Monmouth suffered its second consecutive loss 75-73 to Marist Thursday, falling to 4-7 for 8th place in the conference. The Hawks were outshot from the floor 44.9 percent to 41.0 percent and from distance 42.3 percent to 31.8 percent. The Hawks came away with a 41-31 advantage on the boards, but committed 15 turnovers and struggled from the foul line, connecting on just 16 of 27. Freshman G Deon Jones had a team-high 14 points and grabbed 8 rebounds, while junior G Andrew Nicholas added 10 points and 5 assists. On the season, Monmouth is averaging 71.3 ppg on 42.4 percent shooting. Jones leads the team with 15.1 ppg, followed by Nicholas at 14.0 ppg.
