Storyline: BYU eyes sole possession of second place with a fourth consecutive victory when they host San Francisco at the Marriott Center Saturday.
The Breakdown: The Cougars improved to 8-4 and tied for second in the conference with their 89-76 win over Santa Clara Thursday. BYU shot 45.0 percent from the field and 40.0 percent from outside the arc to the Broncos’ 40.3 percent from floor and 34.6 percent from downtown. The Cougars also dominated the boards 50-32 and converted 31 of 42 from the free throw line. Junior G Tyler Haws scored a game-high 27 points on 9 of 12 shooting, sophomore G Kyle Collinsworth had 18 points, and freshman F Eric Mika added 15 points and 10 rebounds. On the season, BYU is averaging 87.4 ppg on 47.1 shooting. Haws leads the team in scoring with 24.7 ppg, followed by Collinsworth at 14.1 ppg.

Meanwhile, San Francisco is tied with BYU for second in the conference, improving to 8-4 with its 74-67 victory over San Diego Thursday. The Dons connected on 29 of 58 from the floor and 6 of 24 from outside the arc to the Toreros 24 of 57 from the field and 8 of 26 from downtown. San Francisco also finished with a 38-35 advantage on the boards, but struggled from the free throw line, converting on just 10 of 21. Senior F Cole Dickerson scored a game-high 21 points on 9 of 15 shooting, sophomore G Avery Holmes had 15 points and 4 assists, and junior F Kruize Pinkins added 14 points and 11 boards. Through 24 games, the Dons are averaging 77.0 ppg on 48.1 percent shooting. Dickerson leads the team with 14.8 ppg, followed by Cody Doolin at 13.0 ppg.
