Storyline: 15th-ranked Texas goes for a Big 12 best eight consecutive wins when they visit Kansas State at Fred Bramlage Coliseum Saturday.

The Breakdown: The Longhorns escaped with a narrow 59-54 victory over TCU Tuesday, improving to 7-2 for second place in the conference. Texas shot a dismal 31.0 percent from the floor and 5 of 18 from outside the arc, but was only slightly outdone by the Horned Frogs’ 32.7 percent from the field and 7 of 21 from distance. The Horns thoroughly dominated the boards, though, 56-25. Junior F Jonathan Holmes had a game-high 20 points and 16 rebounds, sophomore C Cameron Ridley scored 12 points to go with 9 rebounds, and freshman G Isaiah Taylor added 11 points and 7 assists.  On the season, Texas is averaging 76.9 ppg on 43.9 percent shooting. Holmes leads the team with 13.7 ppg, followed by Taylor at 12.1 ppg.

Meanwhile, Kansas State dropped to 5-4 and 5th place in the conference following its 81-71 loss to West Virginia Saturday. The Wildcats topped the Mountaineers from the field 50.8 percent to 43.4 percent, but were outdone from distance 42.9 percent to 50.8 percent. K-State also came away with a slight 36-33 rebounding edge, but committed 14 turnovers and struggled from the free throw line, connecting on just 8 of 19. Freshman G Marcus Foster scored a team-high 23 points on 10 of 16 shooting, junior G Thomas Gipson had 19 points and 8 rebounds, and senior G Will Spradling added 9 points. Through 22 games, the Wildcats are averaging 68.2 ppg on 43.1 percent shooting. Foster leads the team with 13.9 ppg, followed by Gipson at 12.2 ppg.

Rick’s Pick: The line in this one is currently set at -4 for Kansas State. The Horns have a lot going for them in this matchup, namely size and this hot streak they’ve got going right now. They horns only beat K-State by three points at home when these two got together a couple weeks ago, though. Look for a closer game than the line.
