Storyline: Iona eyes seven straight victories when they visit Canisius Sunday in a battle for the top of the MAAC standings.
The Breakdown: The Gaels sit atop the conference in first place, improving to 11-2 with their sixth consecutive win in a 90-89 thriller at Niagra Friday. Sophomore G A.J. English sent Iona to the victory when he hit a three-point basket on a broken play with 7.9 seconds remaining. Junior F David Laury was the high man with 28 points off the bench, senior G Sean Armand scored 22 points, sophomore G Isaiah Williams had 18 points on 6 of 8 from downtown, and English added 15 points. The Gaels shot 50.9 percent from the field and 45.2 percent from outside the arc to Niagra’s 46.8 percent from the floor and 25.0 percent from distance. Iona conceded a 48-30 advantage on the boards, but converted 22 of 30 from the stripe. On the season, the Gaels are averaging 83.8 ppg on 48.5 percent shooting. Armand leads the team with 18.6 ppg, followed by English at 17.3 ppg.

Meanwhile, Canissius dropped to 10-3 and place in the conference after its 84-73 loss to Manhattan Friday. The Golden Griffins were outshot from the field 51.7 percent to 40.6 percent and from beyond the arc 50.0 percent to 42.9 percent. Canisius also conceded a 46-32 rebounding advantage. Senior G Billy Baron scored a team-high 22 points to go with 7 rebounds and 7 assists, sophomore G Dominique Raney had 15 points off the bench, and freshman G Zach Lewis added 13 points and 4 assists. Through 24 games, the Golden Griffins are averaging 77.1 ppg on 45.7 percent shooting. Baron leads the team with 23.6 ppg, followed by senior G Chris Perez at 11.2 ppg.
