The Providence Friars and the Georgetown Hoyas square off in a key big east contest Monday night at 7PM from the Verizon Center.
Providence lost game number two in a row Saturday at Xavier 59-53. The Friars loss pushes them back towards the middle of the pack in the big east -- the Friars have now let two straight opportunities to separate themselves in the standings allude them. Providence shot the ball poorly in this contest, finishing the game with 37% from the field and just 31% from behind the arc. Bryce Cotton played all 40 minutes but was defended very effectively by Xavier and finished with just 9 points on 4-11 shooting -- one of his worst outings of the season. The trip to DC is about as close to a must win for the Friars as they could have at this stage of conference play.

Georgetown continues to dig out of the hole they dug themselves early on this season and they now are just 1 game under .500 in big east play. Saturday, the Hoyas were able to hold off Butler at home, 71-63. The win was the Hoyas third straight and they were led by the play of their backcourt as Smith-Rivera and Starks combined for 37 points and 8 assists. On defense, the Hoyas held Butler to just 40% shooting overall and they made Butler’s bench a non-factor -- the Bulldogs got just 7 total points from their reserves. A big road trip, with winnable games at Seton Hall and St. John’s looms for the Hoyas after this contest.
This game features two very solid backcourts and I expect it to be a slug it out, big east affair. Look for the Providence forwards to be the difference in this one. I like Henton and Batts to come up big down low against the weak Georgetown front court with 25+ combined points and a dominant effort on the glass as Providence gets the road cover and a much needed win to halt their current losing streak.
