Storyline: Gonzaga heads back to conference play looking for the season sweep of Pepperdine when the two square off at McCarthey Athletic Center Thursday.

The Breakdown: The Bulldogs sit atop the WCC in sole possession of first place at 11-1 and come in off a 60-54 nonconference loss to then #24 Memphis Saturday. The Zags shot 45.1 percent from the floor to the Tigers’ 34.5 percent, but struggled from outside the arc, connecting on just 2 of 16 to Memphis’ 4 of 12. Gonzaga was also dominated on the boards 44-28 and struggled from the free throw line, converting 6 of 13.  Senior C Sam Dower scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed rebounds, sophomore C Przemek Karnowski had 12 points to go with 3 blocks, and junior G Gerard Coleman added 12 points off the bench. On the season, the Zags are averaging 77.9 ppg on 50.1 percent shooting. Junior G Kevin Pangos leads the team with 15.0 ppg, followed by Dower at 14.7 ppg.

Pepperdine, meanwhile, sits in 4th place in the conference, dropping to 7-6 after a 69-67 overtime loss to St. Mary’s Saturday. The Waves shot 41.8 percent from the field and connected on 5 of 12 from outside the arc to the Gaels 35.5 percent from the floor and 6 of 22 from distance, but were outrebounded 40-31 and committed 13 turnovers. Senior F Brendan Lane had a team-high 19 points, 10 boards and 6 blocks, freshman G Jeremy Major scored 14 points, and sophomore F Stacy Davis added 12 points and 7 rebounds off the bench. Through 25 games, Pepperdine is averaging 72.2 ppg on 46.3 percent shooting. Davis leads the team with 14.8 ppg, followed by Lane at 14.1 ppg.

Rick’s Pick: The line in this one is currently set at -17.5 for Gonzaga. The Zags trounced Pepperdine by 17 on the road about a month ago and they are coming off a tough defeat at Memphis that saw them give away a 10-0 run in the final three minutes. Still, though, look for a closer game than the spread.
