The Long Beach State 49ers and Santa Barbara Gauchos lock horns at The Walter Pyramid Thursday.
Santa Barbara has shown the ability to both score and defend which is a good reason why this team owns second place in the Big West at 6-2. Both ends of the floor have been on the same page during a three game winning streak that was capped off by a 75-64 decision at Hawaii. The key was not only holding the home team to 37% from the floor but staying almost even on the glass. The Gauchos connected at 44% and sank six more free throws to secure the win. Alan Williams was dominant with a game high 20 points and 17 rebounds with Michael Bryson tossing in 18 points while Taran Brown and Zalmico Harmon netted 13 and ten points.

Long Beach State is not the nine hundred pound gorilla we saw a few years back but people should be cautioned about judging ther record because it was built on a not too shabby #61 strength of schedule. In the Big West we have seen a team that can both score and defend with a few exceptions with the offense taking the lead in an 88-76 victory over UC Riverside. A 58 point first half explosion staked the 49ers to a ten point lead they never gave up. Both teams sank nearly half their shots with the difference being a 12-5 advantage Long Beach State enjoyed from the perimeter. Tyler Lamb poured in a game high 23 points with AJ Spencer next in line with 17 followed by Travis Hammonds and Branford Jones with 13 and eleven points.
I think Santa Barbara is the better team and could easily win this but with both teams playing well I'm leaning to the home team. If this were on a neutral court I would be on the Gauchos but it's not...
