The Kent State Golden Flashes welcome the Central Michigan Chippewas to town on Saturday.
It's already been a very long season in the MAC for Central Michigan and the one goal within their grasp is to win as many remaining games as possible to improve their seeding when the conference playoffs roll around. For that to happen the Chippewas need better performances from their defense although neither end of the floor came through in an 88-63 loss at Northern Illinois on Wednesday. The Huskies took command with 57.7% shooting to outgun the 42% shooting visitors. Chris Fowler and Braylon Rayson the only dependable scorers with 19 and 15 points with Fowler handing out seven assists while John Simons chipped in with nine.
Kent State was viewed as one of the teams capable of challenging for the conference crown and possibly winning it but that hasn't come to fruition. The Golden Flashes bring a 4-7 record to the table although something tells me this team is better then that. The Golden Flashes broke a slide with a 62-61 decision over Bowling Green which might be the spark this team needed as they trailed the entire way before escaping in the closing seconds. With just 39.7% shooting competing with the Falcons 46% the game was decided from the perimeter where the home team drilled five more threes. Derek Jackson shouldered the scoring load with a game high 25 points with Devareaux Manley and Kellon Thomas tossing in 14 and nine points.
Although I think Kent State is better then they have shown and are easily the better team something seems amiss with them. The question is whether Central Michigan can expose these problems which is doubtful but perhaps a cover is possible...
