Storyline: St. Mary’s eyes four consecutive victories when they welcome BYU Saturday.
The Breakdown: St. Mary’s improved to 9-4 and 2nd place in the WCC after a 69-57 victory over San Diego Thursday. The Gaels connected on 25 of 49 from the floor and 7 of 17 from outside the arc to the Toreros’ 22 of 43 from the field and 3 of 14 from distance. St. Mary’s conceded a narrow 24-23 edge on the boards, but converted 12 of 15 from the free throw line. Senior G James Walker scored a team-high 21 points on 7 of 14 shooting, senior G Stephen Holt had 13 points, and junior G Kerry Carter added 12 points and 3 assists. On the season, the Gaels are averaging 74.3 ppg on 46.1 percent shooting. Junior F Brad Waldow leads the team with 16.2 ppg, followed by Holt at 14.3 ppg.

Meanwhile, BYU fell to 9-5 and 3rd place in the conference after suffering an 89-82 loss at Pacific Thursday. The Cougars were outshot from the floor 51.8 percent to 44.1 percent and from outside the arc 47.6 percent to 41.2 percent. BYU also conceded a 41-32 advantage on the boards. Junior G Matt Carlino scored a game-high 28 points off the bench, junior G Tyler Haws had 20 points, including 8 of 8 from the foul line, and junior G Skyler Halford added 14 points. Through 27 games, the Cougars are averaging 86.5 ppg on 46.8 percent shooting. Haws leads the team with 24.3 ppg, followed by sophomore G Kyle Collinsworth at 14.1 ppg.
Rick’s Pick: The line in this one is currently set at -3.5 for St. Mary’s. BYU topped the Gaels by 13 a couple weeks ago and this is essentially for second place in the conference so there’s a lot on the line here. Look for BYU to bounce back.
