Storyline: Monmouth hopes to put the brakes on a four-game slide when they square off with Marist Sunday.
The Breakdown: The Hawks dropped to 4-11 for 9th place in the MAAC after suffering an 89-70 battering at Iona Friday. Monmouth shot an accurate 50.8 percent from the floor to the Gaels’ 46.7 percent, but struggled from outside the arc, connecting on just 3 of 12 to 14 of 38 from Iona. The Hawks dominated the boards 44-25, but committed a whopping 25 turnovers and converted just 5 of 15 from the free throw line. Freshman G Deon Jones scored a team-high 16 points and grabbed 7 rebounds, junior F Khalil Brown had 13 points off the bench, and junior G Andrew Nicholas added 8 points. Through 26 games, Monmouth is averaging 69.8 ppg on 41.6 percent shooting. Jones leads the team with 14.9 ppg, followed by Nicholas at 14.0 ppg.

Meanwhile, Marist improved to 7-8 for 6th place in the conference after scoring 5 points in the final 7 seconds to stun Siena 65-64 Friday. The Red Foxes connected on a dismal 31.1 percent from the floor to the Saints’ 31.7, but shot well from outside the arc, topping Siena 41.2 percent to 23.5 percent. Marist conceded a 47-41 rebounding advantage, but hit 20 of 23 from the free throw line. Freshman G Khallid Hart scored a team-high 16 points, including 3 of 4 from distance, senior C Adama Kemp had 15 points and 15 boards, and junior G Chavaughn Lewis added 14 points and 7 rebounds. On the season, the Red Foxes are averaging 65.8 ppg on 40.0 percent shooting. Lewis leads the team with 17.0 ppg, followed by Hart at 14.0 ppg.
Rick’s Pick: The line in this one is currently set at -1.5 for Monmouth. Marist squeaked by the Hawks 75-73 a couple weeks ago at home. Monmouth is a bit better statistically and with home court they get the lean.
