The Xavier Musketeers visit the Georgetown Hoyas in pivotal Big East action Saturday at 11:30AM on Fox Sports One.
Xavier kept up their solid play of late this past week as they moved to 8-5 in conference with a 83-64 win over struggling DePaul. Xavier was led in scoring by Justin Martin’s 22 points. Martin added 7 boards and the backcourt of Dee Davis and Semaj Christon chipped in a combined 31 points and 14 assists. The Musketeers shot 27-42 from the floor (64%) and a red hot 80% from deep (8-10). This one could have gotten really out of hand if not for the Musketeers shortcomings at the line where they finished the game 21-38 (55%). Safe to say that Xavier needs to improve in this category with key conference showdowns like Saturday’s looming.
Georgetown has reverted back to the form we saw from them during a six game losing streak in conference play a few weeks back. The Hoyas have now gotten minimal production from their role players in two key conference showdowns and both contests have resulted in losses and a 6-8 record for the Hoyas as they see their tournament hopes slipping away quickly. In their 82-67 road loss to Seton Hall this past week, D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera led the way with 20 points but the Hoyas managed just 5 threes and 41% shooting from the field. To make matters worse, the other Georgetown starters outside of their backcourt combined for only 14 points. The Hoyas will need better post play if they want any chance of getting back in the postseason conversation.
Xavier has been playing much better ball of late and they boast the superior post player in this game in Matt Stainbrook. I like Stainbrook to be the big difference maker with Christon and Davis’s efficient play on offense outdueling Georgetown’s backcourt as Xavier gets the big win and cover in DC to move to 9-5 in Big East play.
