Storyline: 8th-ranked Kansas looks to lengthen its two-game lead over Texas in the Big 12 standings and avenge an earlier loss to the Longhorns when the two hookup at Allen Fieldhouse Saturday.
The Breakdown: The Jayhawks sit atop the conference at 11-2 and come in off a narrow 64-63 escape at Texas Tech Tuesday. Freshman G Andrew Wiggins’ layup with two seconds left on the clock lifted Kansas to the victory. Wiggins finished with a game-high 19 pointsto go along with 6 rebounds, freshman C Joel Embiid had 18 points and 8 boards, and freshman G Wayne Selde added 6 points on 2 of 4 from downtown. The Jayhawks were outdone from the floor 47.1 percent to 45.2 percent and from outside the arc 50.0 percent to 28.6 percent. Kansas came away with a slim 28-26 rebounding advantage, but converted 22 of 30 from the free throw line. On the season, Kansas is averaging 79.5 ppg on 50.3 percent shooting. Meanwhile, Texas fell to 9-4 after suffering an 85-76 defeat at #17 Iowa State Tuesday. The Longhorns dominated the boards 44-35 and connected on 23 of 25 from the free throw line, but sank to a season-low 32.9 percent from the floor and connected on 7 of 23 from outside the arc. The Cyclones shot 49.2 percent from the field and hit 8 of 24 from distance. Freshman G Isaiah Taylor scored a game-high 26 points to go along with 8 assists and 7 rebounds, sophomore G Javan Felix had 16 points, and junior F Jonathan Holmes added 14 points and 9 boards. Through 26 games, Texas is averaging 76.9 ppg on 43.7 percent shooting. Holmes and Taylor lead the team with 13.1 ppg.
Rick’s Pick: Kansas is currently an 11.5 home favorite in this one. Texas handed the Jayhawks their first Big 12 loss of the season three weeks ago in an 81-69 stunner of the sort that’s unlikely to repeat itself, particularly at Allen Fieldhouse. Still, though, look for a closer game than the spread.
