The Butler Bulldogs face another uphill battle with a mid-week visit to #8 Villanova Wednesday night.
Butler continues to run neck and neck with DePaul in the race for last place in conference play as they fell to Providence at home 87-81 this past weekend. Not only have the Bulldogs been thin on offense and struggled at the point guard position all season, but their defense has been abysmal and teams score the ball at will on them. The case was no different against Providence as Butler allowed the Friars to shoot 66% from the field and 65% from downtown. Only 7 Friars saw action and 5 of them ripped off double digit points. Kellen Dunham and Khyle Marshall scored 47 combined for Butler, but the Bulldogs shot under 50% from the floor and just over 30% from deep -- recipes for disaster when your opponent is hitting from all over the court. Butler now sits at 2-13 in conference.

Villanova got a much needed win and a solid win at that over surging St. John’s in a defensive struggle this past weekend 57-54. The Wildcats and Johnnies played a classic Big East defensive battle as both teams struggled to score the ball and the contest was neck and neck throughout. Arcdiacano led the way for the Wildcats with his steady ball handling and quality free throw shooting. The saavy lead guard finished with just 12 points but his impact was huge on both sides of the ball. Hillard had 18 and 4 to lead Villanova in scoring and Echefu chipped in 11 boards to lead all Wildcats. The Wildcats had a +8 edge on the boards but will need to be better with the ball down the stretch -- they turned it over many times in key moments as St. John’s tried to take charge late.
This is a solid play for anyone looking for a Wednesday night sweatless cover. Butler has been terrible on the road and have shown a real vulnerability against physical squads with multiple offensive threats like those on Villanova. I like the Wildcats to pull away early in the second half and take this one down by 17+ to get the cover and win at home and move to 25-3 overall.
