Storyline: The 5th-ranked Kansas Jayhawks look to wrap up the Big 12 regular season title when they visit Oklahoma State at Gallagher-Iba Arena Saturday.
The Breakdown: Kansas improved to 13-2 behind an 83-75 victory over Oklahoma Monday in which they edged the Sooners from the floor 44.6 percent to 44.3 percent and from outside the arc 43.8 percent to 42.9 percent. The Jayhawks also dominated the boards 40-29 and converted 26 of 30 from the free throw line. Junior G Naadir Tharpe scored a game-high 19 points and dished out 5 assists, freshman G Andrew Wiggins had 15 points and 5 rebounds, freshman G Wayne Selden scored 15 points, and freshman C Joel Embiid added 12 points, 13 boards and 4 steals. Meanwhile, Oklahoma State sits in 7th place at 6-8 and comes in off a 76-54 drubbing of TCU Monday. Sophomore G Phil Forte scored a game-high 23 points to go with 4 assists, sophomore G Marcus Smart had 17 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists, and freshman F Leyton Hammonds added 13 points off the bench. The Cowboys connected on 45.2 percent from the floor and 45.2 percent from outside the arc to the Horned Frogs 41.5 percent from the floor and 30.8 percent from distance. Ok State also finished with a 35-26 edge on the boards and converted 6 of 8 from the stripe. On the season, the Cowboys are averaging 81.1 ppg on 47.0 percent shooting. Smart leads the team with 17.4 ppg, followed by senior G Markel Brown at 16.8 ppg.
Rick’s Pick: The line in this matchup is currently set at a PK. Kansas survived a late Ok State surge when these two squared off 6 weeks ago and snuck away with an 80-78 victory. These are desperate times for the Cowboys and anything less than steadfast urgency will not only result in a loss here, it could land them in the NIT. Look for Ok State to come out on top.
