The Winthrop Eagles and the Liberty Flames meet in the opening round of the Big South playoffs.
The conference playoffs are a second chance for many teams to ressurect poor seasons and Liberty was that team in the Big South last year that made a nice run out of nowhere. On the surface the Flames nearly 71 points on 46% shooting isn't too shabby but 70 points is also allowed which is where many of their issues have come about and the reason for the 5-11 league record. Getting both ends of the floor on the same page during a 2-8 season ending run didn't happen and could make their stay in the tourney short. My guess is points will be needed and if Antwan Burrus (13 ppg, 5 rpg) isn't exceeding these number then Liberty might be in trouble.

Winthrop was one of four teams that finished in a four way tie for fourth at 10-6 with the final numbers telling us the opposition was outscored 75-72 overall. During the Eagles 7-2 run to conclude the 2013-14 campaign the defense allowed 65 points or less six times and the offense averaged over 80 points which might give the rest of the conference something to think about as the Eagles could be peaking at just the right time. The scoring seems to be in good hands with four players breaking the ten point barrier with Keon Moore and Joab Jerome averaging 25 points and eight boards and giving the team scoring and a presense on the glass.
Liberty has played their schedule competitively which had me leaning to the points but Winthrop has looked even better so I'm cautiously going with the Eagles...
