The Appalachian State Mountaineers take on the Samford Bulldogs in a SoCon playoff opener.
The #9 seed Mountaineers finished the year almost the way they started which was slow with a 5-11 record in the SoCon. Appalachian State was a streaky offensive team with points commonplace for a few games and then hard to find fo awhile. The defense was much the same way and getting both on the same page was an issue that was never resolved. If ASU is to do some damage in the postseason the offense has to get on one of those hot streaks and if that is going to happen this will be a score by committe offense if DD scorers Jay Canty and Mike Neal are suspended.

Samford has been a tough team to nail down with very good offensive numbers as they score 71 points on nearly 48% shooting. The problems are defensively where opponents are averaging 77 points on 46.6% accuracy which makes it difficult to win. I tink the question now is can the Bulldogs get their act together offensively because I don't know if the defense can suddenly find a way to get stops. Assuming points are the only way to go then Tim Williams (18 ppg, 7 rpg) should touch the ball as often as possible and put his 61% shooting to work while hoping a few others can help out.
All I can say is I hope you don't lose money on this. Appalachian State won both meetings by six and I'm wondering what changed to make me believe they can't win another? I'm not convinced they win but all is possible in the SoCon...
