The Wagner Seahawks and Mount Saint Mary’s Mountaineers will play Saturday afternoon for a spot in the Northeast Tournament final. These teams split their previous two meetings this season.
The Seahawks got here with an 83-59 win over Central Connecticut State. Despite shooting only 35.5 percent from the field, they only turned the ball over four times and were able to take advantage of 23 free throws. They also played solid defense, holding the Blue Devils to just six threes out of 21 attempts. Guard Kenneth Ortiz led the way with 21 points. The Seahawks are now 4-1 ATS on the season with that victory.
The Mountaineers won a much closer game in a 72-71 victory over St. Francis (NY) that was decided in the final seconds. In the win, they got to the line 40 times and grabbed 36 rebounds. Their shooting percentage wasn’t pretty either at 33.3 percent, but they did get 28 points from guard Rashad Whack and 17 from Julian Norfleet, along with six assists. With their victory they improve to 1-2 ATS on the season.
This spread is awfully interesting considering Wagner lost the first game by nine points, and then won the most recent meeting by six points. With this being a conference tournament game, you’d think both teams bring their A game, and the margin of victory is decided somewhere in the middle.
You have to love the rebounding advantage the Seahawks have in this contest, as they average 39.6 boards and the Mountaineers average just 32.1. However, neither team is all that great offensively and they get to the line an awful lot at both ends. I see this game coming down to the wire and being a lot closer than what the spread indicates.
Give me the points in what should be a competitive game.
