The Western Illinois Leathernecks and South Dakota State Jackrabbits will play Sunday night in a Summit League Quarterfinal matchup. The Jackrabbits swept the season series.
The Leathernecks ended their regular season losing seven of their last eight games. On the season, they average 59.8 points on 44.3 percent shooting and allow 64 points on 43 percent shooting. They are a slow-paced team that shoots the ball well, but really relies on their defense to win them games, as six of their 10 wins came when they held teams under 60 points. Freshman guard Garret Covington is the only player averaging double-digit points. ATS, the Leathernecks are 9-14 overall.

The Jackrabbits ended their season winning eight of their last nine games and looking like a team that could win the conference. On the season, they average 72 points on 43.7 percent shooting and allow 70.5 points on 46.1 percent shooting. They want to get up and down the floor and shoot as many shots as possible, as they have three players averaging at least 13.4 points per game. Crazy enough, this style of play doesn’t hurt their defense that much, as they’ve held 14 teams to under 70 points. ATS, they are 12-10-1 overall.
I always hate laying the big chalk in a tournament game, but the Jackrabbits leave me no choice. They’ve covered the number in eight of their last nine games and are 7-0 ATS in their last seven games against teams with a losing SU record.
Meanwhile, the Leathernecks are 1-4 ATS in their last five games overall and have failed to cover the number in their last four meetings against the Jackrabbits.
Assuming the shots will fall for South Dakota State, Western Illinois won’t have any answer. Not to mention the Leathernecks are outclassed on the glass as well, as they average just 30.7 boards per game. The Jackrabbits average 35.2 rebounds.
Expect a double-digit win in this one.
