The Norfolk State Spartans open the MEAC postseason with the Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks on Monday.
Norfolk State is one of those virtual unknowns that made a name for themselves in the Big Dance and would like to do it once again. The Spartans have some good and bad performances versus both good and bad teams which makes them tough to nail down. They have outscored the opposition 73-72 and finished in a third place tie in the conference because their defense has shown some improvement. I think the Spartans key to winning in the playoffs will be improved defensive play with the offense picking up the slack. The offense will be in good hands if Malcolm Hawkins (16 ppg) and Pendarvis Williams (15.6 ppg) continue to score.

At 4-12 in the conference Maryland-Eastern Shore found themselves in the basement with two wins coming in the final week of the regular season. The Hawks seldom got both ends of the floor on the same page and the numbers spell that out with the opposition winning the battle on the scoreboard 75-66. The offense did improve over the last few weeks with 71 points scored in five of the last seven but only one went in to the win column meaning the defense has continued to struggle. The only shot UMES has is if the defense can keep the score close to 70 points and the duo of KyRee Jones (13 ppg) and Hakeem Baxter (13.7 ppg) have career nights.
With a double digit spread I think we have to look at the potential to cover and would you prefer backing the third place team or the one that finished in the cellar...
