The Santa Barbara Gauchos take the floor with the Cal Poly Mustangs in the Big West playoffs.
Santa Barbara might not have won the regular season Big West title but they might have been the most impressive team. The Gauchos finished second behind UC Irvine with a 12-4 mark behind an offense that could shoot and score and one of the best defenses in the conference. With such balance UCSB could win in any number of ways and did but were simply a handful when both ends of the floor were on the same page. If this team plays their usual solid defense the scoring and overall play of Alan Williams with 21 points and nearly 12 rebounds should take this team far.

In my view, if Cal Poly could find some consistent offense they would be a solid team because defense has held their own but it's simply tough to win when you are outscored 65-63 because the defense has zero room for error. The Mustangs began the season 3-0 but ended on a 3-10 run to land in a 6th place tie and scored more then 70 points three times in conference action. If Cal Poly is to pull an upset in the postseason the defense probably can't allow more then 65 points which still might be stretching the limits of their scoring. Leading scorer Chris Eversley averages just under 14 points and David Nwaba under 12 but both need to add another 3-4 points to give this team a chance.
Ironically these teams played in the final game of the season with Santa Barbara winning by 16 but even more ironic is Cal Poly beat the Gauchos in the second conference game two months ago. I don't see any other choice in this one...
