The UTEP Miners and Southern Miss Golden Eagles will play Thursday night in a C-USA Quarterfinal matchup. When these teams played on February 22, the Golden Eagles won 77-68.
The Miners head into this matchup after beating East Carolina on Wednesday, 77-68. In that win, they shot 51.8 percent from the field, grabbed 37 rebounds and had 15 assists on 29 made baskets. Four of their five starters scored in double figures, but Julian Washburn led the way with 20 points. On the season, the Miners average 69.5 points on 46.7 percent shooting and allow 64.4 points on 38.9 percent shooting. They’ve held five of their last six opponents to 68 or fewer points and are 10-16 ATS overall.

The Golden Eagles will play their first game in a week and are currently riding a five-game winning streak. On the season, they average 70.9 points on 45.2 percent shooting and allow 62.7 points on 42.4 percent shooting. They’re a deep team with seven players averaging more than five points, and senior Michael Craig leads the way with 11 points and 7.2 rebounds. Defensively, they’ve held 10 of their last 12 opponents to 68 or less points. They are 18-9-1 ATS overall.
The Miners are 7-1 ATS in their last eight following an ATS loss and 17-7-1 ATS in their last 25 conference games. The Golden Eagles are 4-1 ATS in their last five games overall and 8-2-1 ATS in their last 11 against teams with a winning SU record. The favorite is 10-4 ATS in the last 14 meetings between these two teams.
This is going to be a very low-scoring game with both teams putting defense first. While I’d consider waiting for the total to be released, I’ll go ahead and back UTEP and the points. Don’t be surprised if this game comes down to the final minutes.
