The Saint Mary’s Gaels and the Utah Utes face off on Tuesday in a first NIT college basketball matchup.
The Saint Mary’s Gaels won three of their last five games but it was a disappointing year as they finished in fourth place in the WCC. St. Mary’s is 11-4 in out of conference games and 5-6 against teams with a RPI of 100 or better. Brad Waldow leads the Gaels averaging 15.8 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. Stephen Holt is averaging 14.9 points, and James Walker III and Kerry Carter are each averaging 9.5 points. Saint Mary’s is averaging 72 points and they are shooting 45.2 percent while defensively they are allowing 65.8 points and their opponents are shooting 44.9 percent. St. Mary’s have been regulars I the NCAA Tournament but this year they simply didn’t have enough.

The Utah Utes lost two of their last three games to close out the season as they watched the bubble burst as they missed out on the Big Dance. Utah is 12-2 in non-conference games but they played the 97th ranked schedule in the country and that was their undoing. Delon Wright leads the Utes averaging 15.7 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 5.2 assists to lead the Utes. Jordan Loveridge averages 14.7 points and 7.1 rebounds, Brando Taylor averages 10.5 points, and Dallin Bachynski is averaging 6.9 points. Utah is averaging 75.7 points and they are shooting 48.9 percent while defensively they are allowing 64.1 points and their opponents are shooting 41 percent. Utah finish the season in eighth place in the Pac-12.
St. Mary’s is 4-1 against the spread against the Pac-12, 2-5 against the spread in their last seven games, and 6-2 against the spread following a loss. Utah is 4-0-1 against the spread against the WCC, 16-4-1 against the spread in their last 21 non-conference games, and 23-10 against the spread following a loss.
The total is set at 130.5 and I have this one going over that number. I also have a strong pick on who will cover the spread and I will post that in the Premium Area as well as on the App.
