The Vermont Catamounts visit the Georgia Bulldogs for NIT action Wednesday night at 8PM on ESPNU.
Vermont had a great conference season and fell just short of making the NCAA’s when they lost to Albany in the conference final 67-58. The Catamounts finished the conference season 15-1 and were the consensus pick to punch their ticket to the dance. Instead they fell just short and given they play in a one bid league, they find themselves in NIT play. The Catamounts are led by Clancy Rugg who mans the post with 13.8 points per game and 6 boards. Senior forward Brian Voelkel is the utility man for Vermont -- Voelkel averages 6.7 points, 8.2 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game. Vermont ranks 47th in the country in shooting percentage with 46.7% shooting per game.

Georgia sits at the 2 seed in the NIT after falling short in the SEC tournament and eliminating all chances of an at large bid. The Bulldogs are strong in the post and average 37.1 boards per game -- good for 63rd nationally. Marcus Thornton leads the team in boards with 6.1 boards per game and Donte’ Williams averages 5.1 per game. Guard Charles Mann is the most productive Bulldog, averaging 13.1 points per game, 4 rebounds per game and 3.1 assists. The Bulldogs finished third in conference play but had few quality wins and were hurdled by Tennessee for an invite to the tournament.
Georgia will likely use the NIT as motivation after being snubbed by the committee. I like the Bulldogs physical presence up front to be the difference as the Bulldogs stifle the Catamounts offense and pull away in the 2nd half for the cover and win at home.
