The SWAC meets the Big West when the Texas Southern Tigers tangle with the Cal Poly Mustangs in a play in bout.
Cal Poly is probably the biggest surprise of the Big Dance as they enter the tournament at 12-19 after knocking off the two top seeds before squeezing by number five Cal State Northridge as the 6th seed. The Mustangs went in to the Big West playoffs as losers of nine of eleven before winning the league playoffs in the only way they could by keeping things ice and slow and controlling the scoreboard which is the only chance a team that scores and allows 63 points has. If the Mustangs can slow down Texas Southern then the points will come from Chris Eversley (13.6 ppg) and David Nwaba (12 ppg) and whoever else can step up.

Texas Southern finished second in the SWAC but stormed to three consecutive postseason wins behind one of the better offense in the game that averages 76 points. The red hot Tigers rallied past Prairie View 78-73 in the conference championship game for win number nine in a row. Although this team is known for their ability to put the ball in the basket, the defensive end of the floor has really stepped up during the season ending run with an average of 65 points given up. If the defense can continue the strong play the points will be coming from Aaric Murray (21 ppg-7.7 rpg) and several other capable scorers.
I'm not quite sure what to make of this as Texas Southern has played an awful schedule and Cal Poly has suddenly become giant killers. Not real confident at all...
