In the second round of the NCAA tournament, the George Washington Colonials and Memphis Tigers will play Friday. Both teams received an at-large bid after falling short in their conference tournaments.
George Washington is as balanced of a team you’ll find in the tournament. The Colonials average 73.4 points on 46.4 percent shooting and allow 66.9 points on 41.4 percent shooting. George Washington has five players averaging double-digit points, and senior guard Maurice Creek leads the Colonials with 14.3 points. While George Washington is a good offensive team, free throw shooting is an issue at 65.4 percent. Defensively, the Colonials have allowed at least 71 points in three of their last four games. George Washington is 17-10 ATS overall this season.

The Memphis Tigers have been up and down all season, but are a solid team when clicking. Memphis averages 77.6 points on 47.9 percent shooting and is led by two seniors in Joe Jackson and Michael Dixon Jr., a duo that combines for 26.1 points. Defensively, the Tigers allow 70.4 points on 43.4 percent shooting. Memphis also does a nice job of crashing the boards, averaging 37.6 rebounds, but the free throw shooting at 64.9 percent is a concern. Memphis is 16-13 ATS overall this season.
This game will be decided by which team can make its free throws down the stretch. Good luck guessing which team that will be. At the end of the day though, Memphis has the much better athletes and is a senior led team that has faced much tougher competition than George Washington.
The Tigers have beaten Gonzaga, SMU, Oklahoma State and swept Louisville. George Washington struggled against good competition, losing to UMass, Dayton, Saint Louis and twice to VCU. The Colonials also aren’t nearly as physical as the Tigers.
You have to eat the small chalk in this tournament game.
