The Oklahoma State Cowboys play the Gonzaga Bulldogs in the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament on Friday.
Oklahoma State dropped to 21-12, 8-10 Big 12 after losing to Kansas 77-70 in overtime in the semifinals of the Big 12 tournament last week. On the season, Marcus Smart leads the Cowboys with 17.8 points and 4.7 assists per game. Markel Brown pitches in with 17.1 points and 2.9 assists per game, while Kamari Murphy is averaging a team-high 6.2 rebounds per game. Oklahoma State averages a solid 80.3 points per game while shooting 46.5% from the field as a team this season. Oklahoma State is a tough, physical team that played in one of the tougher and more physical conferences in the country. Oklahoma State suffered a terrible three-game losing streak with Smart suspended during the season. Since Smart’s return, the Cowboys have only two losses against Iowa State and Kansas, both occurred in overtime. Oklahoma’s offense scheme setups up well against Gonzaga and I think they will have play well on Friday.

The Gonzaga Bulldogs improved to 28-6, 15-3 WCC after beating BYU in the WCC tournament title game over a week ago. On the season, Sam Dower leads the Bulldogs with 15 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. Kevin Pangos is averaging 14.1 points per game and 3.7 assists, while David Stockton averages a team-high 4.2 assists per game. As a team, Gonzaga averages 76.9 points per game while shooting an impressive 49.8% from the field. There is no question the Bulldogs can score and they score at a high rate. However, Gonzaga does not play great defense and when they have played tournament teams this season, their defense ahs given up a ton of points. Gonzaga also does not score at the same high rate when they are on the road as they have one of the worst home/road efficiency splits in the country this year.
I think Oklahoma State will prove to be too much for Gonzaga in this one. The Cowboys will flex their muscles and will have no problem scoring against a soft Bulldog squad. I don’t think Gonzaga can keep pace with the Cowboys in this one.
