The Dayton Flyers play the Syracuse Orange 3rd round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday.
The Dayton Flyers beat Ohio State 60-59 on Thursday to advance to the 3rd round of the tournament. Vee Sanford made a layup with 4 seconds left on the clock to help the Flyers pull off the upset over Ohio State. Dyshawn Pierre scored a team-high 12 points and grabbed a team-high 8 rebounds for Dayton, who outscored the Buckeyes 20-12 in transition points. On the season, Jordan Sibert leads the Flyers in scoring with 12.5 points per game, while Devin Oliver is a close second with 12.1 points per contest. Oliver also averages a team-high 7.5 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game. Dayton is averaging 73.4 points per game while shooting 46.6% from the field as a team this year. Dayton lost to St. Joe’s in the conference championship after winning four in a row and ten of eleven overall. The Flyers will need to shoot the ball well from the perimeter if they want to move on to the Sweet Sixteen on Saturday.

The Syracuse Orange advanced to the 3rd round of the NCAA tournament by blowing out Western Michigan 77-53 on Thursday. On the season, C.J. Fair leads the Orange with 16.7 points per game while also averaging 6.2 rebounds per contest. Trevor Cooney is averaging a second-best 12.2 points per game, while Tyler Ennis is averaging 12.7 points per game and a team-high 5.6 assists per game. If Syracuse is going to make a run in the conference and/or the NCAA tournament they will bed Jerami Grant, who has been dealing with a back injury, to stay healthy. Grant is averaging 12 points and 6.8 rebounds per game this season. The Orange are shooting 43.7% from the field while averaging 68.2 points per game as a team this season. Syracuse is a decent rebounding team, averaging 35.3 boards per game. Syracuse has lost three of their last five and five of their last eight games. Fortunately for the Orange they will play a team that may struggle against their infamous 2-3 zone. Syracuse went an impressive 7-2 on the road in conference play and is now 4-1 on neutral courts this season.
The NCAA tournament is all about matchups and this is just a bad matchup for Dayton. The Flyers do not shoot well from the outside and they will be forced to against the Syracuse zone defense. As long as the Orange play aggressive on offense and pound the boards, I think they will win and cover in this one.
