The Mercer Bears will look to keep their Cinderella story going when they play the Tennessee Volunteers in the third round of the NCAA tournament.
Mercer is coming off the most shocking upset of the tournament with a 78-71 win over the Duke Blue Devils. Mercer shot 55.6 percent from the field and had 16 of their 25 made baskets assisted. On the season, Mercer averages 77.2 points on 46.9 percent shooting and allows 67.6 points on 40.7 percent shooting. The Bears are a tough team down low that averages 38 rebounds, but they share the basketball well, racking up 16.4 assists per game. Mercer shoots 73.5 percent from the free throw line and 38.4 percent from three. The Mercer Bears are 3-3 ATS overall.
Tennessee is one of the hotter teams in the tournament, and that continued with an 86-67 win over Massachusetts. The Vols shot 53.6 percent from the field in the win and stole the ball eight times. On the season, Tennessee averages 71.2 points on 44.5 percent shooting and allows 61.6 points on 41.3 percent shooting. Like Mercer, Tennessee makes a living on the glass, snagging 38.3 rebounds per game. Tennessee also shoots 71.7 percent from the free throw line and 32.8 percent from three. The Tennessee Volunteers are 20-13 ATS overall.
The Bears are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 non-conference games and 8-3-1 ATS in their last 12 games following a ATS win. The Volunteers are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games overall and 5-1 ATS in their last 6 neutral site games.
These are two physical teams that match up well. There’s not going to be a ton of scoring, which is why I’m going to take Mercer and the points. I think Tennessee wins, but the score will be close. The Vols don’t have enough offense to consistently blow teams out.
