The Memphis Tigers and Virginia Cavaliers will play Sunday night in the third round of the NCAA tournament.

Memphis won its first tournament game in a 71-66 victory over the George Washington Colonials. In the win, the Tigers shot 49.1 percent from the field and got 19 points from Michael Dixon Jr. off the bench. On the season, the Tigers average 76.7 points on 47.6 percent shooting and allow 70 points on 43.6 percent shooting. Memphis is a rather small team that plays a ton of guards, but it still manages to snag 37.6 rebounds per game. Offensively, Memphis shoots 65 percent from the free throw line and 33.2 percent from three. The Memphis Tigers are 17-13 ATS overall.

Virginia Cavaliers vs. Memphis Tigers - 3/23/14 East Region

Virginia allowed the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers to hang around, but still ended up winning 70-59. The Cavaliers didn’t grab a single offensive rebound in the win, but they did shoot 52.5 percent and had four players score in the double figures. On the season, Virginia averages 66.1 points on 45.4 percent shooting and allows 55.4 points on 38.6 percent shooting. Virginia butters its bread defensively and has held 11 of its last 12 opponents to 63 or less points. Offensively, the Cavaliers shoot 66.9 percent from the free throw line and36.7 percent from deep. The Virginia Cavaliers are 18-11-2 ATS overall.

The Tigers are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 neutral site games and 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games following a S.U. win. The Cavaliers are 15-5-2 ATS in their last 22 games overall and 5-0-1 ATS in their last 6 games following a ATS loss.

This is going to be a great defensive team. However, we have a Virginia team that takes care of the ball and a Memphis team that can get a bit careless. With that said, I’ll take the Cavs to cover the number.

Virginia is the far more consistent team in this matchup and should overwhelm Memphis and end up winning by double digits.
