The Memphis Tigers and the Virginia Cavaliers meet in 1-8 action Sunday evening at 8:40PM on TNT.
Memphis moved into the round of 32 after holding on late to get past a feisty 9 seed George Washington squad. The Tigers had an off shooting night from deep but got contributions across the board and a huge night from reserve guard Michael Dixon Jr. Dixon Jr., scored 19 points and knocked down all of his free throws to lead the Tigers in scoring. Joe Jackson finished with 15 points, 6 boards and 5 assists. Memphis won the battle on the boards and racked up a team high 19 assists to just 8 for the Colonials. The win moves the TIgers to 24-9 overall -- they will need to shoot the ball better from deep against the Cavaliers lock up defense.
The Virginia Cavaliers avoided a potential upset against Coastal Carolina Friday night. The Cavaliers started out of the gate slowly and found themselves down 10 with just under 7 minutes to play in the first half. After cutting the deficit to 5 at the break, the Wahoos opened up the second half with a barrage of threes and never looked back on their way to an 11 point, 70-59 victory. Anthony Gill had 17 off the bench and was inserted into the second half starting lineup after displaying a different level of energetic play in the first half. Joe Harris finished with 11 and Malcolm Brogdon added 14, 5 boards and 5 assists. UVA shot it 80% at the line and their hot shooting in the 2nd half pushed them to 52.5% for the game.
UVA has not faced another team as scrappy as Memphis. The Tigers get after you defensively and have the athletes in the backcourt and upfront to give UVA some trouble. I like the more complete UVA team to show up in this one after early sleepwalking in Friday night’s contest. Look for the Cavaliers to trade baskets for about 30 minutes in this one before they wear down the Tigers and pull away late for the cover and a berth in the sweet 16.
