The 5 seed LSU Tigers make the short trip to face the top seeded Southern Methodist Mustangs in NIT action Monday night at 9PM on ESPN.
LSU moved into the second round of the NIT after getting past a pesky San Francisco Dons squad on the road 71-63. The Tigers starters were the difference in this one as big man Johnny O’Bryant had 13 and 6 in the post and swingman Jerrell Martin had 16, 6 boards and 5 assists for LSU. The Tigers shot the ball 46% from the floor and were the more physical team down low despite losing the rebounding battle. The Tigers had 11 assists to just 10 turnovers and were pretty solid at the line where they finished 13-19. A trip to SMU will prove a much more stiff test for a LSU team that has been up and down all season.

SMU moved into the second round after overcoming a sluggish start to run past UC Irvine 68-54 at home. The Mustangs well behind by as many as twelve early on in this one and came out in the second half on a mission. With efficient shooting and strong half court defense, the Mustangs outscored the Anteaters 39-24 in the second half. The Mustang starters were a bit sluggish in this contest but they were able to get solid production from the bench play of center Cannen Cunningham who had 17 points and 3 rebounds. Ben Moore added 11 and 7 and guard Nick Moore led the way with 8 assists.
These two teams match up pretty well as they both have significant size and big long athletes on the wings. I think the difference here will be the home court advantage and the head coaching ability of Larry Brown. I like the Mustangs to win a hard fought battle here and to get a much bigger game from Markus Kennedy and Nic Moore as the Mustangs pull the narrow cover.
