The Minnesota Golden Gophers and the Southern Miss Golden Eagles face off on Wednesday in NIT college basketball action.
The Minnesota Golden Gophers have won four of their last five games including their first two NIT games. Minnesota tipped off their NIT with a seven-point win over High Point and followed it up on Sunday with an eight point win over St. Mary’s. Andre Hollins leads the Golden Gophers averaging 13.8 points per game. Deandre Mathieu is averaging 12 points, Austin Hollins is averaging 11.5 points and 5.2 rebounds, and Malik Smith is averaging 7.7 points. Minnesota is averaging 71.5 points and they are shooting 44.6 percent while defensively they are allowing 67.8 points and their opponents shoot 42.5 percent. Minnesota’s loss in the Big Ten Tournament to Wisconsin was the difference between them being a NIT team and a NCAA Tournament as their 10th ranked strength of schedule and 44 RPI were good enough to make the Big Dance.

The Southern Miss Golden Eagles finished the regular season in a four-way tie for first place in Conference USA but a loss to La. Tech in the conference tournament meant a trip to the NIT. Southern Miss handled Toledo in their NIT opener and then upset Missouri by eight points in their second round matchup on Sunday. Neil Watson leads the Golden Eagles averaging 10.6 points per game. Michael Craig is averaging 11.2 points and 7.6 rebounds, Daveon Boardingham is averaging 10.2 points, and Aaron Brown is averaging 10 points. Southern Miss is averaging 72.1 points and they are shooting 46.4 percent while defensively they are allowing 62.8 points and their opponents are shooting 42.4 percent. Southern Miss is 3-1 against teams with a RPI better than 50.
Minnesota is 7-1 against the spread in their last eight games against Conference USA teams, 4-9-1 against the spread following a win, and 4-1 against the spread in their last five home games. Southern Miss is 4-1-1 against the spread in their last six games, 4-1 against the spread following a win, and 4-0-1 against the spread in their last five non-conference games.
The total here looks to be o the low side and for my free pick I like the over.
I also have a pick on who will cover the spread and I will post that in the Premium Area as well as on the App.
