Somebody will be advancing to the Elite Eight after the Connecticut Huskies and Iowa State Cyclones butt heads Friday.
Connecticut was more fortunate then anything in their opening round 89-81 defeat of Saint Joseph's who quite literally gave that one away. The Huskies made sure there would not be a repeat as they thrashed Villanova 77-65 in round two in dominant second half where they lit up the Wildcats defense for 52 points. UConn connected at 44% from the floor and were 9-20 on threes but were demons at the defensive end with Nova held to 35% and an 11-31 mark from distance which was their offense. Shabazz Napier was king of the boxscore with 25 points and five yanks with Lasan Kromah tossing in 12 while the trio of DeAndre Daniels, Ryan Boatright and Terrance Samuel added 11 points each.

The big news for Iowa State heading in to their match up with North Carolina was the huge loss of Georges Niang. The Tar Heels were supposed to be able to use their size and length to exploit the Cyclones without their 6-7 forward. It didn't work out that way as UNC squandered a late lead in an 85-83 defeat as their supposed advantage has them watching the rest of the tournament at home. The Heels led the shooting battle 47%-44% but the Cyclones nailed 12-26 from long range which was the difference. DeAndre Kane would not be denied with a high of 24 points, ten boards and seven helpers followed by Melvin Ejim with 19 while Naz Long tossed in 12 points with Dustin Hogue and Monte Harris netting 14 and 13 points.
Iowa State proved they still have the weapons to win without Niang but North Carolina has blown up before so I'm not shocked. Not really and advantage to exploit here except UConn has all their weapons...
