A ticket will be punched to the Elite Eight after the Virginia Cavaliers and Michigan State Spartans tangle Friday.
Michigan State had no problem in their NCAA opener against a smallish Delaware squad in a 93-78 rout but Harvard was a different story in round two where 12 point half time lead shrunk to a single point before the Spartans came away with an 80-73 decision. MSU held some clear advantages with 49% shooting in contrast to Harvard's 41% but the number that sticks out was their 7-21 effort on threes when the Crimson should have been pounded down low. Branden Dawson was unstoppable with 26 points and nine pulls on 12-15 shooting with Gary Harris netting 18 while Adreian Payne contributed 12 points.

Winning the ACC crown over Duke was a huge achievement for Virginia basketball but it's been on to bigger and better things with a date set for the Sweet 16. Getting there was not very toughas the Cavaliers surged past Coastal Carolina in the opening round before crushing Memphis 78-60 in what was really no contest. UVA cruised to a 15 point lead after 20 minutes and were in cruise control the rest of the way behind white hot 55.6% marksmanship and stiffling defense that held the Tigers to under 41% which meant six more field goals. Joe Harris gave the Cavaliers 16 points and five yanks with Anthony Gill next in line with 13 points and eight pulls. Mike Tobey tossed in 12 points and snared six boards while Malcolm Brogdon and Justin Anderson chipped in with ten points each.
The world will be on Michigan State and I'll bet the majority of brackets has them penciled in as National Champions. That's a definite possibility but I also bet Virginia would be more then happy to see the Spartans fire up another 21 threes and so will I...
