The Tennessee Volunteers play the Michigan Wolverines in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament on Friday night.
The Tennessee Volunteers beat Mercer 83-63 in the 3rd round of the NCAA tournament last weekend. On the season, Jordan McRae leads the Volunteers in scoring and assists, averaging 18.6 points and 2.5 assists per game. Jarnell Stokes is averaging a second-best 14.7 points per game while averaging a team-high 10.3 rebounds per contest. Tennessee averages 71.3 points per game while shooting 44.7% from the field as a team this season. The Volunteers are ranked 20th in the country when it comes to rebounding the basketball, averaging 38.8 boards per game. Tennessee relies on their defense, holding their opponents to 61.4 points per game on average this season, which ranks 17th in the country. The Volunteers have been red hot for the past month, winning eight of their last nine overall, with the only loss coming to Florida by seven points on a neutral floor.
The Michigan Wolverines beat Texas 79-65 last weekend to advance to the Sweet 16 on Friday night. On the season, Nik Stauskas leads Michigan in scoring, averaging 16 points per game to go along with a team-high 4.5 assists per contest. Caris LeVert is averaging a second-best 13.1 points per game, while Jordan Morgan is averaging a team-high 5 rebounds per game. Glenn Robinson III and Derrick Walton Jr. have played great down the stretch for the Wolverines. Michigan is averaging 75 points per game while shooting 48.1% from the field as a team this season. The Wolverines are not a great rebounding team, averaging only 31.9 boards per game; however, when you shoot extremely well from the field you have limited rebounding opportunities on the offensive end of the floor. Michigan is a solid defensive team, holding their opponents to 64.6 points per game on average this season. The Wolverines come into this game winners of nine of their last ten games overall. Michigan’s latest loss came against Michigan State by 14-points in the Big Ten Championship game two weeks ago.
Both of these teams come in playing extremely well on both ends of the floor. Michigan has more experience, considering they were in the national championship last year against Louisville. However, Tennessee has some veteran players and they have played some big time teams this year. I believe Michigan is the overall better team, but there is something about Tennessee that I love right now. They are playing like a team with a chip on their shoulder and they rely on one of the best defenses in the country. I’m taking the points with the Volunteers.
