The UConn Huskies and the Iowa State Cyclones face off on Friday in a NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 matchup with the winner going to the Elite 8, a win away from the Final Four.
The UConn Huskies are no strangers to NCAA Tournament success and once again this year they are showing that they have a style that translates well to tourney play. Connecticut opened their 2014 March Madness with an eight-point win over St. Joseph’s and followed it up with a 12-point win over second seed Villanova. Shabazz Napier is averaging 17.8 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game to lead the Huskies. DeAndre Daniels is averaging 12.6 points and 5.7 rebounds, Ryan Boatright is averaging 11.9 points, and Nies Giffey is averaging 8.4 points. UConn is averaging 72.5 points and they are shooting 44.8 percent while defensively they are allowing 63.7 points and their opponents are shooting 8.9 percent. Both of UConn’s recent losses have been to Louisville who is still very much alive in the NCAA Tournament.
The Iowa State Cyclones won the Big 12 Tournament and are one of the two Big 12 teams remaining in the NCAA Tournament after the conference had seven teams make the field. Iowa State got their March Madness started with an 18-point win over NC Central and then followed that up with a second round thriller over North Carolina. Melivin Ejim leads the Cyclones and is the Big 12 Player of the Year averaging 18.1 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. DeAndre Kane is averaging 17.1 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 5.8 assists, Dustin Hogue is averaging 10.9 points and 8.5 rebounds, and Naz Long is averaging 7.1 points. Iowa State is averaging 83.2 points and they are shooting 47.5 percent while defensively they are allowing 74.2 points and their opponents are shooting 41.8 percent. Iowa State now has a few days to work on how they will try and replace the injured Georges Niang.
UConn is 4-1 against the spread in their last five NCAA Tournament games, 4-1 against the spread against the Big 12, and 4-1 against the spread against a team with a winning record. Iowa State is 6-0 against the spread in their last six games, 5-1 against the spread in their last six non-conference games, and 6-0 against the spread against a team with a winning record.
The total is set at 146.5 but that looks to be a big number for this one and my free pick is under.
I also have a pick on who will cover the spread and I will post that in the Premium Area as well as on the App.
