The Michigan State Spartans and the UConn Huskies face off on Sunday at Madison Square Garden in a NCAA Tournament Elite matchup with the winner going to Dallas and the Final Four.
The Michigan State Spartans were in war in their Sweet 16 matchup with Virginia but in the end they pulled out a win to advance to this game. The win over UVA followed NCAA Tournament wins over Harvard and Delaware as Tom Izzo looks to continue his trend that any player who has played for him at Michigan State and stayed four years has played in the Final Four. Adreian Payne is the Spartans leader averaging 16.5 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. Gary Harris is averaging 16.6 points, Branden Dawson is averaging 11.4 points and 8.3 rebounds, and Keith Appling is averaging 11.4 points. Michigan State is averaging 76.1 points and they are shooting 47.6 percent while defensively they are allowing 65.7 points and their opponents are shooting 39.8 percent. Michigan State is healthier than they have been all season and are one of three Big Ten teams to make the Elite Eight.
The UConn Huskies have been fighting the odds all NCAA Tournament but they continue to defy them as they find themselves a win away from a return to the Final Four. UConn bounced St. Joe’s in their first round game before beating Villanova and finally knocking off Iowa State on Friday. Shabazz Napier is averaging 17.9 points and 5.9 rebounds per game to lead the Huskies. DeAndre Daniels is averaging 13 points and 5.8 rebounds, Ryan Boatright is averaging 12.1 points, and Niels Giffey is averaging 8.4 points. UConn is averaging 72.7 points and they are shooting 45 percent while defensively they are allowing 64 points and their opponents shoot 39.2 percent. UConn missed the NCAA Tourney last year because of academic reasons but they look to be making up for lost time.
Michigan State is 5-2-1 against the spread in their last eight games, 0-3-1 against the spread in their last four non-conference games and o-3-1 against the spread in their last four NCAA Tournament games. UConn is 5-1 against the spread against a team with a winning record, 4-0 against the spread in their last four non-conference games, and 5-1 against the spread in their last six neutral site games.
The total looks to be on the high side but I expect this to be an up and down the court game with shots flying from downtown and for it to go over the number.
My stronger play is on who will cover the spread and I will post that in the Premium Area as well as on the App.
