The Arizona Wildcats and the Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers face off on Friday as the 2014-2014 Men’s College Basketball season gets underway.
The Arizona Wildcats lost Aaron Gordon and Nick Johnson, two of the top players in the nation, but they still look like contenders to win it all this season. Arizona has a trio of returning stars who all appear to be NBA first rounders’ and one of the top recruiting classes in the country. Brandon Ashley was putting up regular double-doubles last season until he was injured in February. Center Kaleb Tarczewski is a seven footer and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson is a do-it-all player who should excel this season in more of a leadership role. Stanley Johnson is considered the top freshman in the nation and he should fill in for the loss of Gordon, Dustin Ristic is another seven footer, and Parker Jackson-Cartwright is a 5’9” point guard. Arizona looks loaded once again and they could be better than last year’s team.
USA TODAY Sports
Mount St. Mary’s was one of he Cinderella’s last season winning the Northeast Conference Tournament before losing to Albany in Dayton in the play in games. Mount St. Mary’s saved their best for last as they went just 16-17 overall for the season. The Mountaineers play a swarming style of defense but they are just 1-21 all time against teams ranked in the top 25 including a 33-point loss to Michigan State last season. All three of MSM’s top scorers from last season are gone leaving Taylor Danher as the top returning scorer as he averaged 7.1 points and 5.0 rebounds per game and Byron Ashe also returns and he averaged 7.0 points per game. Gregory Graves and Khalid Nwandu also played solid minutes last season and are expected to be bigger contributors. Any way you look at this one Mount St. Mary’s is in over their head in this one.
Arizona is 1-4 against the spread in their last four home games, 1-4 against the spread in their last five games, and 20-9 against the spread in their last 29 non-conference games. Mount St. Mary’s is 1-5 against the spread in their last six non-conference games and five of their last seven games have gone over the total.
There is no line for this game but I look for Arizona to win easily.
