The College of Charleston Cougars and Furman Paladins tip things off Friday night at the Timmons Arena.
The College of Charleston Cougars look to build on last year’s 14-18 record but will have to get something going offensively. Defensively, there are little concerns with a College of Charleston team that allowed just 62.7 points per game and returns Adjehi Baru. Baru is one of the better players in the CAA and averaged 7.5 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game last season. The defense will be good enough to keep College of Charleston in games most nights, but the offense that averaged 63 points and lost leading scorer Willis Hall is questionable at best. Anthony Stitt is the Cougars only double-digit returning scorer, which means that guys such as Canyon Barry and Joe Chealey have to take their game to the next level. The College of Charleston Cougars have potential if they can get their offense going.
USA TODAY Sports
The Furman Paladins have nowhere to go but up after finishing last season with just nine wins. The good news for the Paladins is that they return one of the better overall players in the Southern Conference in Stephen Croone. Last season, Croone averaged 19.1 points and 3.7 assists on 46.8 percent shooting. Furman also has experienced depth with the return of Kendrec Ferrara, Larry Wideman and William Gates Jr., all players who played a key role last year and averaged at least eight points per contest. The bad news for Furman is that this is still a young team with only one senior, and even with Croone on the roster, the Paladins ranked 307th in the league in points per game. Furman will certainly have its moments but its important that the fans expect baby steps as far as progress is concerned.
The Cougars are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 vs. Southern and 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games overall. The Paladins are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 home games and 2-12 ATS in their last 14 non-conference games. The Cougars are 4-0 ATS in the last 4 meetings in Furman and 14-6-1 ATS in the last 21 meetings overall.
I'm not sure how you don't pick the College of Charleston Cougars in this matchup considering they've owned the Furman Paladins against the number season after season. Until that changes, I suggest you continue riding the money train.
