The Western Carolina Catamounts and Mississippi State Bulldogs square off Friday night at the Humphrey Coliseum.
The Western Carolina Catamounts won 19 games, which were the most since 2009 and hope they can build on that win total this season. Western Carolina will have to move on without star player Trey Sumler, but James Sinclair showed more than enough promise to takeover the role as the go-to guy. Last season, Sinclair averaged 11.8 points and 4.7 rebounds, now he just has to bump his shooting percentage above 40 percent. At 6’7”, Torrion Brummitt has the potential to really come out of his shell and help Western Carolina at both ends of the court, while Mike Brown is an experienced guard who could also have a breakthrough season. The The Western Carolina Catamounts have some promising pieces in place and with a few bounces to go their way, they could make some noise in the Southern Conference.

The Mississippi State Bulldogs have been slowly building their program and look to take another step after winning just four conference games last season. Mississippi State could surprise some folks this season with nearly their entire roster returning, including their top three scorers. Craig Sword will lead the way for the Bulldogs after shooting 48.5 percent from the field, and Gavin Ware has the potential to be a double-double machine after coming into his own as a sophomore. Mississippi State’s biggest weakness is the ability to stroke the long ball, but expectations are high for sophomore guard I.J. Ready, who should see an increased workload. The Mississippi State Bulldogs still have a ways to go before turning the corner in an improved SEC, but this is a team that could win a few games many weren’t expecting.
The Catamounts are 3-7-1 ATS in their last 11 Friday games and 2-7 ATS in their last 9 vs. Southeastern. The Bulldogs are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 home games and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
The Mississippi State Bulldogs are an experienced and talented team that should have little trouble winning this game and covering the number. It's going to take time for Western Carolina to adjust without its top player from last year on the court.
