The Michigan State Spartans and Navy Midshipmen tip things off Friday night at the Alumni Hall.
As long as Tom Izzo is still the head coach, the Michigan State Spartans will continue to be a force to be reckoned with. However, MSU lost a lot of talent and experience from a year ago, including Gary Harris, Adreian Payne and Keith Appling. Michigan State will now lean on Branden Dawson, who has improved each season and averaged 11.2 points and 8.3 rebounds last season as a junior. Denzel Valentine is also a player who started to come into his own late in the season and will be asked to take on a bigger role. Freshman guard Lourawls Nairn is the Spartans top recruit and should provide some explosiveness on the offensive end. While not the overwhelming favorites to win the Big Ten like most seasons, the Michigan State Spartans will only get better as the season goes on and will be that team nobody wants to play come tournament time.

The Navy Midshipmen really have nowhere to go but up after finishing last season with just nine wins, including four in conference play. Navy will get a boost with the return of leading scorer Tilman Dunbar, who missed much of last season due to suspension. Dunbar does a nice job of setting up his teammates and shot 43.8 percent from the field, which is important for a Navy team that averaged just 60.7 points per game. Navy also returns its other top scorers in Worth Smith, Brandon Venturini and Zach Fong, giving the Midshipmen something to feel good about heading into the season. Will Kelly is an all-around play for Navy and should take yet another step forward in the right direction as a junior. Overall, the Navy Midshipmen aren’t the most talented team in the world but have enough experience that should make them a lot more competitive.
The Spartans are 11-3 ATS in their last 14 road games and 0-3-1 ATS in their last 4 games overall. The Midshipmen are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 non-conference games and 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games overall.
It's no secret Michigan State is the better team and has the better athletes. While this is a lot of chalk to lay on an opening game, this is a huge mismatch.
