The Fresno State Bulldogs and Pepperdine Waves play Friday night at the Firestone Fieldhouse.
The Fresno State Bulldogs picked things up towards the end of last season and finished with a decent 21 victories. Fresno State loses its leading scorer and rebounder in Tyler Johnson, but returns enough talent to be a sleeper in the MWC this season. Marvelle Harris averaged 14.3 points and 5.3 rebounds last season and is likely going to be the Bulldogs go-to guy at both ends of the court. Cezar Guerrero is a solid shooter from downtown at 34.5 percent and Paul Watson can shoot the lights out of the gym at 37.9 percent shooting from beyond the arc. The Fresno State Bulldogs have some scorers who are going to put on a show but their main concerns have to be on the defensive end where they allowed 70.5 points per game last season. Consistency is going to be a big thing with Fresno State if it hopes to improve.

The Pepperdine Waves have the ability to make a strong run in the WCC this season with Stacy Davis leading the way. Last season, Davis averaged 15.1 points and 7.6 rebounds, proving he’s one of the better overall players in the conference. While Pepperdine has its star, the questions will come on the defensive end after losing WCC DPOY in Brendan Lane to graduation. Keep in mind, Pepperdine allowed 72.5 points per game with Lane on the floor, and with him off opens up big holes. One player to keep an eye on is Jeremy Major, who averaged 9.1 points and 4.5 assists as a freshman. The The Pepperdine Waves have the scoring ability to be a real threat this season and make some noise. It’s just going to be interesting to see how the Waves hold up defensively.
The Bulldogs are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 vs. West Coast and 34-16-1 ATS in their last 51 road games. The Waves are 9-3 ATS in their last 12 vs. Mountain West and 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games overall.
These are two teams I like heading into the season, so it's only right I take the points with Pepperdine here. The Waves are a real sleeper in the WCC and have a chance to prove it with a win in this game. Who knows if the Waves can pull off the outright win, but with Davis and others, they'll certainly keep this thing close.
