The New Mexico State Aggies travel to Fred Koch Arena to battle the Wichita State Shockers to kick off the season.
The Wichita State Shockers finished the regular season undefeated and were rewarded with a number one seed in the Big Dance. Of course the Shockers didn't win it all and do lose their best player in Cleanthony Early but I don't think the demise of Wichita State isn't going to happen yet as the team has established a winning attitude and the players this program signs seem to define teamwork. It doesn't hurt that the backcourt combo of Fred Van Vleet, Ron Baker and Tekele Cottonare all back. If the Shockers have a weakness it's the front court where players that have little or no experience need to step up with 6-8 Shaq Morris, Zach Morris and Bush Wamukota among the leading candidates but don't be surprised if others step up because I expect that to happen.
New Mexico State was expected to emerge as the top team in the WAC and finished second in the conference behind Utah Valley before winning the conference tournament and earning the NCAA invite where they gave San Diego State all they could handle. The Aggies generally dominated the competition in the WAC with an average margin of victory close to 20 points so the question is can NMSU win the WAC and make another appearance in the NCAA's. The answer is probably with four starters back on a team that is absolutely huge with 7-5 Sim Bhullar and 6-10 Tshilidzi Nephwe leading the front court with a combined 21 points, 16 rebounds and almost five blocks. Leading scorer Daniel Mullings brings almost 17 points back and can do everything well. This is one of the biggest teams in the country and will once again be tough to handle in the paint.
New Mexico State are 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games overall with the under going 9-4 in NMSU last 13 non-conference games while NMSU are 11-5 ATS in their last 16 road games. For Wichita State the over is 6-2 in WICH last 8 home games and is 8-3 in WICH last 11 overall while the under is 12-5-1 in the Shockers last 18 Fri. games. New Mexico State has size to spare and will try to pound Wichita State down low with the Shockers size basically inexperienced. I've said this before but the Shockers somehow mesh and find ways to win and I don't expect the Aggies size will be enough to get the win here especially in front of the Shockers home crowd...
