The Albany Great Danes and Providence Friars tip off Saturday night at the Dunkin Donuts Center.
The Albany Great Danes are looking for another American East title and a spot in the NCAA tournament. While Albany isn’t the favorite to win the conference again, Peter Hooley and Sam Rowley have all-conference potential. Hooley was Albany’s leading scorer last season with more than 15 points per game and should bump his shooting percentage up, while Rowley has the ability to be a double-double machine considering he’s improved each year with the program. Those two will carry much of the load with the Great Danes losing a ton of production outside of them, but JUCO transfers such as Evan Singletary and Richard Peters provide some depth to go along with their two key guys. After last season, you should know not to sleep on Albany.

The Providence Friars are bound to take a step backwards without Bryce Cotton leading the way. Cotton did everything for the Friars, as he averaged an insane 39.9 minutes per game, all while leading Providence in points and assists. Without having the leader on the floor and one of maybe two guys who can create their own shot, Providence has some question marks. LaDontae Henton has been a consistent double-digit scorer and Tyler Harris averaged 11.6 points and 5.1 rebounds last season. Those two players will keep Providence from falling completely off a cliff, while Kris Dunn will remain the X-factor for this team. Dunn has been hampered by shoulder injuries much of his career but is super talented when healthy and will help replace Cotton. There’s still talent and potential with Providence but it won’t be the same without its superstar player.
The Great Danes are 8-0 ATS in their last 8 road games and 20-8 ATS in their last 28 games overall. The Friars are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 non-conference games and 8-2 ATS in their last 10 home games.
