The Kent State Golden Flashes open the season with the Youngstown State Penguins with both teams looking to improve on last year.
The Kent State Golden Flashes have been accustomed to challenging for the MAC crown for the past several years but not last season as a 7-11 conference mark was well off the pace. The Golden Flashes were not the biggest team around and leaned heavily on their backcourt which ultimately wasn't enough. The good news is the Golden Flashes have their three top scorers back in the fold with the trio of Derek Jackson, Kris Brewer and Deveraux Manley each averaging double figures and a combined 32 points overall. Head coach Rob Senderoff does have some size coming in but they are really an unknown and hopefully the big men can rebound and pick up some of the scoring load.

If you follow the Horizon League you know the Youngstown State Penguins have been a score first squad that could rack up points in bunches. The Penguins certainly lit up the scoreboard a season ago to the tune of 77 points and generally need every last one because their defense gave up points in bunches as well. Despite their scoring prowess YSU was only 15-17 overall and were a non factor in the conference at 6-10 simply because they were often outscored. The problem this season is their top three scorers have departed including the Horizon's top gun in Kendrick Perry who takes a hefty 21 points with him. Youngstown State will lean on forward Bobby Hain who contributed eleven points and almost eight boards with DJ Cole averaging over eight points and giving the backcourt some stability so it will take awhile to get the right pieces in the right places.
The under is 6-2 in KENT last 8 vs. Horizon League while going 3-8 ATS in their last 11 games overall and are 14-6 ATS in their last 20 road games. For Youngstown State the Penguins are 2-6-1 ATS in their last 9 games overall while the over is 21-9 in YSU last 30 Sat. games. Head to head the underdog is 7-2 ATS in the last 9 meetings. I think the Golden Flashes have changed less then Youngstown State has undegone many more changes so I'll take the points here...
