The Illinois State Redbirds open their season with a visit from the Utah State Aggies on Sunday.
On the surface the 18-16 record of Illinois State from a season ago wasn't a knock your socks off type of year but it was good enough for 4th in the Missouri Valley and got the team in to a tournament. The good news is the team was unproven a year ago and was quite successful and the better news is four starters are back and the expectations are for even bigger things. The Redbirds will boast a backcourt of Bobby Hunter and Daishon Knight who bring nearly 24 points back with Knight also grabbing over 4 1/2 rebounds. Reggie Lynch is perhaps a star in the making as he averaged eight points 4 1/2 pulls amd nearly three blocks last season as a freshman. If experience counts for anything the Redbirds are in good shape.
USA TODAY Sports
The Utah State Aggies opened their season with a solid 72-61 victory versus visiting Weber State who is projected to be the the top team in the Big Sky. The Aggies defended better and protected the ball which were obvious differences. USU connected on 46.6% of their field goals and committed jus seven turnovers although a 14-24 mark at the foul line better not be a sign of things to come. The key was forcing 20 giveaways and and firing off nine more shots against the 38.8% shooting Wildcats who needed the extra shots. David Collette led a trio od double digit scorers with 22 points, six pulls and five steals on 11-15 shooting with Jalen Moore right behind him with 20 points and eight boards on 7-12 accuracy. Julion Pearre rounded out the top contributors with a ten point effort.
The under is 7-1 in USU last 8 non-conference games and is 21-8 in USU last 29 road games. For Illinois St the under is 7-1-1 in ILST last 9 overall and is 40-15-1 in ILST last 56 home games. I know that Illinois State has plenty of experience back from last season but until we see them play we don't really know a whole lot. Utah State opened the year with a solid win but need to ht their free throws andd improve their scoring balance but with one game it's difficult to judge them. Not much to go on this early in the season so I'll take the points...
