The Oakland Golden Grizzlies will take on the Eastern Michigan Eagles in the CBE Hall Fame Classic this Monday Night.
The Oakland Golden Grizzlies battled tough against the 14th ranked Iowa State Cyclones in their season opener past Friday, however, fell-short of pulling off the upset losing 93-82. The Golden Grizzlies were led by Senior Forward Corey Petros who poured in 25 points on 10-12 shooting, which grabbing 8 boards and dishing out 6 assists. Reigning Horizon Freshman of League, Kahlil Felder, ended up with 23 points and 10 assists. Although Iowa State will probably have one of the top-rated offensives throughout the year, long-time coach Greg Kampe has to be concerned with the Golden Grizzlies defensive performance this past Friday. Going into the season, defense was going to be a concern for Oakland as they ranked near last in the country last year (329th) giving up 77.4 ppg, and based on what Iowa State was able to do against Oakland (51.7% from the field, 43.8% 3-point FG%), it doesn’t look as if Coach Kampe has found any answers on that side of the ball. Oakland certainly seems that it will be heavily relying on their starting five this year, as both Petros and Felder basically played whole game, and only two members of the bench saw any significant time.

The Eastern Michigan Eagles opened up their season with a 64-52 win over the St. Francis (ILL) Fighting Saints. The Eagles were led by Karrington Ward who had a solid all-around game (16 pts, 8 reb, 2 ast, 3 stl, 2 blk), Raven Lee who scored in 11 pts, and Anali Okoloki who had 10 pts and 4 reb. Last year, Coach Rob Murphy’s zone defense caused many problems for opposing teams, as the Eagles were ranked in the top-20 off many of the defensive rankings last year including being ranked 14th in turnover margin at 3.6 and 16th in the country in scoring defensive holding opponents to 61.4 ppg. Although Coach Murphy lost a few main pieces from the defensive from last year in big-men Da’Shonte Riley and Glenn Bryant, we can probably expect the Eagles to still be very tough to score on anywhere inside the 3-point line this season.
The Golden Grizzlies are 4-10-1 ATS in their last 15 games overall, however, they are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games. The Eagles are 8-1 ATS in their last 9 vs. the Horizon League, however, just 1-5-1 ATS in their last 7 games.
The Golden Grizzlies and Eagles play very different styles of basketball as Oakland will love to run and gun and the Eagles will try to slow the game an win it with defensive. Although I do believe that the Eagles will once again have a strong defensive this year, I think they are going to miss Riley and Bryant more than they realized and this still will be a team searching to find points on the offensive end. Oakland looked better than I expected this past Friday and I think that they’ll do enough to keep this game pretty close. I’m going to take the Golden Grizzlies and the points.
