The SMU Mustangs and Gonzaga Bulldogs play Monday night at the McCarthey Athletic Center.
The SMU Mustangs won their season opener over the Lamar Cardinals, 93-54. In the victory, SMU shot a lights out 61.1 percent from the field and scored 40-plus points in each half. Defensively, SMU held the Cardinals to 31.4 percent shooting and forced 16 turnovers. Even with star recruit Emmanuel Mudiay playing in China, SMU is a very talented and well coached team with Larry Brown calling the shots. Until Marcus Kennedy returns, Yanick Moreira and Nic Moore lead the Mustangs with an explosive tandem that produced 25 points and six rebounds in the opening victory. Ben Moore is also an SMU player looking to come into his own as a sophomore, as he shot a cool 8-12 from the field and dished out five assists. The SMU Mustangs are one of the better teams in the American conference and have more than enough in place to make an NCAA tournament bid.

The Gonzaga Bulldogs beat down the Sacramento State Hornets in their opening victory, 104-58. Gonzaga gave fans a sneak peek of what’s to come with a loaded roster that shot 54.5 percent from the field and grabbed 47 rebounds. Kyle Wiltjer scored 18 points on 50 percent shooting, and Kevin Pangos had 16 points and three assists. Defensively, Gonzaga held the Hornets to 35.7 percent shooting and forced 22 turnovers. Top recruit Josh Perkins also dished out six assists and eight points in 27 minutes of action off the bench. The Gonzaga Bulldogs are an experienced and deep team that should be the top favorite to win a talented WCC. Simply put: Gonzaga is going to win a ton of games this season.
The Mustangs are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 non-conference games and 12-5 ATS in their last 17 games following a S.U. win. The Bulldogs are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 home games and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
This is going to be a hell of a game between two teams that will be playing in the NCAA tournament. SMU could easily win this game, so I'm going to take the Mustangs and the truckload of points here.
