The Toledo Rockets and VCU Rams play Tuesday afternoon at the Stuart C. Siegel Center.
The Toledo Rockets crushed the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks in their opening game, 71-58. Toledo held the Lumberjacks to 33.3 percent shooting and forced 17 turnovers, while the offense shot 44.2 percent from the field and had 17 assists on 23 made baskets. Nathan Boothe led Toledo with 19 points and six rebounds, and Julius Brown had 10 points and eight assists. Justin Drummond was 4-8 from the field and backup center Zach Garber grabbed six rebounds in 16 minutes of action. The Toledo Rockets are one of the favorites to win the MAC this season due to being led by two terrific seniors and having one of the top offenses in the conference. Expect Toledo to shoot the three-ball better in this matchup after going just 3-12 in the season opener.
USA TODAY Sports
The VCU Rams opened up their season with a bang in a 85-69 victory over the Tennessee Volunteers. VCU played its classic defense in the victory by holding the Vols to 42.1 percent shooting and forcing 17 turnovers, while the offense shot 40.3 percent from the field and made 11 threes. Melvin Johnson led VCU with 23 points on 17 shots and Treveon Graham had 15 points and 14 rebounds. Terry Larrier scored 11 points off the bench and Mo Alie-Cox grabbed eight rebounds in 28 minutes. Along with VCU’s ridiculous defensive effort, the Rams also grabbed 49 rebounds, which includes 23 on the offensive end. Overall, if the VCU Rams can play with that type of effort throughout the rest of the season, this is going to be a tough team to beat no matter who they play.
The Rockets are 10-3-1 ATS in their last 14 non-conference games and 4-10-1 ATS in their last 15 games overall. The Rams are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 home games and 6-2-1 ATS in their last 9 games overall.
If you've been following along, you know I love the VCU Rams style of play and defensive ability. But Toledo is no slouch and should shoot a higher percentage than it did in its season opener. Look for the Rockets to keep this game closer than expected.
