The Xavier Musketeers and the Long Beach State 49ers face off on Tuesday in Cincinnati in college basketball action.
The Xavier Musketeers were a NCAA Tournament team a year ago but after losing in a play in game in Dayton they are on a mission to leave no doubt this season. Xavier opened their 2014-2015 campaign by stomping Northern Arizona by 33 points in a game they led by 26 at the half. Matt Stainbrook had a monster game against NAU scoring 18 points and grabbing nine rebounds and Trevon Bluett scored 18 points and had five rebounds. Jalen Reynolds added 16 points and five rebounds and Myles Davis had 13 points. XU shot a blistering 66.7 percent from the floor including 36.8 percent from beyond the three-point arc. Xavier also won the rebound battle 31-25 and shot 73.7 percent from the free throw line. Xavier was expected to be good this season but the jury is still out on how good they are.
USA TODAY Sports
The Long Beach State 49ers are 1-1 this season after losing a shootout with BYU by five points they got into the win column beating San Francisco State. LBSU hasn’t seemed to have much trouble scoring but they are lacking on the defensive end of the court. Mike Caffey leads the 49ers in scoring averaging 19.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game. McKay LaSalle is averaging 14 points, David Samuels is averaging 11 points and five rebounds, and Deontae North is averaging 9.5 points. Long Beach State is shooting 53.9 percent from the floor including 57.5 percent from beyond the three-point arc but just 63.3 percent from the free throw line. It is clear Long Beach State can score with just about anyone.
Xavier is 4-1 against the spread in their last five non-conference games, 5-0 against the spread following a win by 20 or more points, and 22-7 against the spread in heir last 29 home games. Long Beach State is 12-3 against the spread in their last 15 road games, 2-5 against the spread in their last seven games, and 1-6 against the spread against the Big East.
Long Beach State can score but Xavier is just a tough team all the way around and the big line looks like a sucker play for the dog so I am going to lay the big number with the favorite.
